Tweetcenter_img Share 24 Views   4 comments Dr Thomson FontaineFormer IMF economist and United Workers Party candidate for the Grand Fond constituency Dr. Thomson Fontaine has explained that the call to boycott two Independence activities is a onetime event.Earlier this month, Dr Fontaine requested of all Dominicans that they should not attend the National Youth Rally carded for November 1 and the Independence Day Military Parade on November 3.“It is a onetime event, we made it very clear that this is not an ongoing protest, that it is a onetime protest… we are asking people to simply stay away and that will be the end of it,” he told members of the media at Roseau’s Market Day with a Difference on October 26.Dr Fontaine added that Dominicans will not be asked to boycott other independence activities as it is their belief that Dominica’s independence should be celebrated.“Thirty-five years as a nation, we need to do our best to come together and celebrate,” he stated, “but at the same time we believe that it was important for us to kind of set a mark and at least do a protest that will send a very strong message that we are not in support of where the government is heading.”The boycott of these two events he explained is a means of “of letting the world know that we are not in favour of the way in which the president was elected and that’s as far as it stops”.His party is “very much supportive” of activities like Creole in the Park and Market Day with a Difference.He also noted that Market Day with a Difference was very exciting, “at those times you feel really proud to be a Dominican and I feel very proud to be part of this to be part of these people; to be part of what I think is a very unique Dominican experience and I really wish that more Dominicans would come out on a day like this to witness and to see what the Dominican people have to offer”.However, Dr Thomson indicated that it is important that the public is urged to boycott the events which they have been called to and is hopeful that no backlash will be felt afterwards.He encouraged all to enjoy the independence season as “it is a great time and we are asking for unity”.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img
