Rugby Union Parrtiwi 1 has taken out the Joey Charlie Sevens Cup in Daru recently. Under the guidance of former PNG Pukpuk Sevens and Stingrays flyer Cecil Iakoe as coach, the Parrtiwi outfit beat GG Pirates to go one step further from last year’s performance. Last year, Parrtiwi went down to Kazens in the Cup final, and were pushed to take sweet revenge in beating the latter 14-10 in the Cup semi-final. The win is the first for the rural based side, and they have sworn to keep it up Pahuture way as long as they can. Previously, GG Pirates won the title in 2014 and 2015, then Kazens took over in 2016 and 2017. 38 teams again took part, 14 more than what the organising committee had prepared for. Daru town as usual was packed with families, friends and supporters from the villages along the coastline of Western Province and up the Pahuture and Fly rivers and also from Port Moresby. The Joey Charlie Cup 7s committee would like to thank the South Fly MP Sekie Agisa, the DDA, all participating teams and their sponsors and the visiting match officials from Port Moresby along with the tournament director.
