Share This!July is here, and we continue our monthly schedule of updates to the Disney World Crowd Calendar. We are taking a wait-and-see approach before making any changes to Disney’s Hollywood Studios crowd levels. With the first week of Toy Story Land being open, we are already seeing wait times at the new attractions settle down. Next month’s update will include changes based on what we learn from July’s data. The increase in Disney hotel promotions suggests that reservations are down. We believe that some people are delaying their trips and waiting until Galaxy’s Edge (the Star Wars land at Hollywood Studios) opens in late 2019. The fall has a few days where Magic Kingdom crowd levels dropped 4 or 5 points. These are days where the park closes early due to a holiday or private party.July 2018The longer park hours and summer heat help keep the crowd levels moderate in July. The new Toy Story Land will draw guests to spend more of their time at Hollywood Studios. The crowd levels predictions at the other parks have been reduced slightly. Take advantage of the early opening times and late closings. Take a break during the peak of the heat, and you can tour the parks with low to moderate crowds.August 2018The summer heat continues, but the crowds start to taper off. School districts starting going back to school in early August. By the end of the month, 80% of students are back in classes. Hollywood Studios crowds will start to moderate and get in line with the other parks. August 17, we see the first 2018 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom. Typically the days between the parties have higher crowd levels. Many guests will avoid the Magic Kingdom on party days due to the shorter park hours.September 2018September has some of the lowest crowd levels of the year. Labor Day weekend is the end of summer crowds. The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, free dining, and other hotel promotions are ways that Disney tries to increase attendance. The Halloween parties continue in August, with Magic Kingdom having higher crowds on non-party days.October 2018October will see some weeks with summer level crowds. Many school systems have their fall breaks in October. The Food & Wine Festival continues through November 12. The Magic Kingdom has 18 Halloween parties. Days without a party will have the Magic Kingdom crowd levels in the 7s and 8s.November 2018Besides Veteran’s Day weekend and Thanksgiving week, crowd levels will be low. The Magic Kingdom begins to offer Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Just like with the Halloween Party, the days between the parties have higher crowd levels. Many school districts have the entire week of Thanksgiving off. Crowds start growing the weekend before Thanksgiving and peak the Saturday after Thanksgiving.December 2018Early December has low crowd levels. Most school districts are in session through Friday, December 21. December 22 is the start of the most busy time at Walt Disney World. Crowds won’t drop until 2019 begins.January-February 2019Crowd levels taper off quickly. By Friday, January 4, 30% of school districts are back in session. Most of the remaining school districts go back to school the week of January 7. There will a bump in the crowd levels for WDW Marathon Weekend (January 9-13), MLK Jr. weekend (January 19-21), and Presidents Day week (February 15-23).March – April 2019Easter Sunday is April 21, 2019. When Easter is late, spring break crowds are spread across more weeks. In 2019, the “spring break” season will span from March 10 to April 21. The weeks of March 17 and April 14 will have the highest spring break crowds.May – June 2019The end of April through most of May will have low crowds. Most school districts are in session and wrapping up the school year. Memorial Day weekend going into the first week of June will have high crowds. In the second week of June, crowds will moderate to typical summer level crowds.

21 November 2012The world’s largest privately held software company, SAS, has developed an online educational resource to support maths and science teaching and learning in South Africa, the company announced on Tuesday. The World Economic Forum’s annual report on financial development, released at the beginning of November, placed South Africa 62nd out of 62 countries assessed for the quality of their maths and science education. As a result, the Basic Education Department is looking for solutions to address this problem that has the potential to hold back the economic development of the country.‘Interactive, standards-based resources’“SAS Curriculum Pathways provides interactive, standards-based resources in English, arts, maths, science, social studies and Spanish for Grades 6 to 12,” SAS said in a statement. The resource comes in two versions – one for teachers and the other for students. It provides students with access to web-based learning environments using proven instructional strategies and techniques.“SAS Curriculum Pathways is also modular by topic, so that it doesn’t have to map to a particular curriculum to provide insights into any area,” said SAS vice-president for the Middle East and Africa, Riad Gydien.“Because of this, it also automatically differentiates between users so that faster students can progress while slower ones get the repetition that they need.”They learn by using various resources, such as visual models, images, virtual labs, diagrams, graphic organisers, audio recordings of literary excerpts, poetry, dialogues, historical documents and narrated and captioned videos. The simulations and learning activities incorporate real data so that students can experience and understand real-world applications. It also lets students test a hypothesis and validate conclusions, construct their understanding using interactive websites, apply learning in other contexts and bring external learning into the classroom, according to SAS.SAS has spent US$75-million developing the product drawing from the talent of its own technical experts and consulting educators. The company has made the decision to make the product available for free in South Africa as part of its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) activities.Forming partnerships to overcome challenges“In South Africa, there are certain challenges to implementation that we are addressing,” says Gydien.“Teachers need to be trained in the use of the resource, and are in some cases resistant to change, and of course there are connectivity and hardware problems in certain areas.”SAS is currently training the teachers through train-the-trainer sessions, so that the solution can be rolled out in each province. The company is also forming partnerships with NGOs to provide the hardware and connectivity that will enable the use of this online tool.Institutions like the University of the North West, Rhodes University and Stellenbosch have registered for their free licence to use Curriculum Pathways in their previously disadvantaged individual (PDI) teacher development programmes or in their bridging courses for students who don’t fulfill all the requirements in maths and science.“In South Africa, where there are significant problems in the education system, especially with maths and science, SAS Curriculum pathways offers a solution that supports and augments the education system to address those gaps,” says Gydien.“We are currently looking at ways to expand the reach of this programme, as we are committed to improving the education system today, to develop the IT and financial leaders of tomorrow.”SAinfo reporter

Portfolio Minister, Hon. Shahine Robinson, said the Ministry’s Electronic Labour Exchange (ELE) Department has, over the years, formalised a series of partnerships which have resulted in not only improved awareness, but also increased access to the system for both employers and jobseekers. Additionally, more than 3,700 vacancies were identified and 6,000 individuals referred for employment. Some 2,000 persons have been successfully placed in employment through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security’s Labour Market Information System (LMIS) since 2013, when the website was enhanced and redeployed. Story Highlights Some 2,000 persons have been successfully placed in employment through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security’s Labour Market Information System (LMIS) since 2013, when the website was enhanced and redeployed.Additionally, more than 3,700 vacancies were identified and 6,000 individuals referred for employment.Through the LMIS, employers can post job openings and search for matching candidates, while jobseekers can post résumés and apply for jobs online. The LMIS also provides a comprehensive database with indicators on the economy, the population of the labour force, employment levels, educational levels of persons in the labour force, education and training, and the emergence and contraction of industries and sectors within the economy.Portfolio Minister, Hon. Shahine Robinson, said the Ministry’s Electronic Labour Exchange (ELE) Department has, over the years, formalised a series of partnerships which have resulted in not only improved awareness, but also increased access to the system for both employers and jobseekers. These include collaboration with the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, a business organisation consisting of 29 employers; and the Jamaica Library Service (JLS), which operates 119 branch libraries and 106 other supporting units across 13 parishes, all providing access to the LMIS portal.“The project supported the development and implementation of various labour market studies designed to improve the functioning of the labour market. Consequently, in a fulsome way, it is providing employers, educators, students and parents, and all other labour market actors with the relevant information for making important decisions in respect of critical hiring, employment, career and educational programme decisions, in addition to addressing the mismatch between skills and jobs,” she said.Mrs. Robinson was addressing a ceremony hosted for Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Executive Vice-President, Julie Katzman, who visited the Ministry on September 6.The Minister, who accompanied Ms. Katzman on a tour of the ELE satellite location at 1F North Street in Kingston, used the occasion to highlight the unit’s daily operations as well as the LMIS’ research component. The labour market study has enabled the identification of key skills gaps in areas such as science and technology, mathematics, engineering and other related disciplines, Mrs. Robinson said.“This along with the efforts of the Labour Market Reform Commission will result in a labour market which will present the potential of fostering productivity, generating higher real incomes, encouraging competiveness – in both the local and global marketplace, and providing an effective social safety net,” she added.Since 2013, the IDB has provided financial and technical assistance in support of the objectives of improving human capital and labour market outcomes in Jamaica, by enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of public employment services.

Perhaps the area that touched me most was when he mentioned the challenges he encounters living in Denham Town, and the fact that he did not allow this to take away or to distract him from what he wanted. My commitment to him is that he will never have to ask where the school fee is going to come from to put him through university to achieve,” Mr. McKenzie tells JIS News.“There are many more like him in West Kingston. This comes after Archer was yesterday remanded to jail yet again. It is also being reported that Archer’s 28-day sentence has since been squashed. However, an instruction was given that he be remanded an additional seven days and his bail revoked.QC Smith told members of the media, “To keep Omar Archer in jail under an alleged offence of criminal libel is to make him a political prisoner.” He added, “Criminal libel must be abolished so that the Bahamas can grow as a democracy.”Smith believes it is a Human Rights case now since offences like this “has sent an element of fear and anxiety and concern throughout the citizenry.” He believes people are now afraid to speak out against the government because they may be politically victimized like Archer and others.According to QC Smith, the Human Rights Association would also be taking international measures to ensure the international communities become aware of Archer’s case and the current laws in the Bahamas. He added, “This government in particular have been using these offences to prosecute people.”Archer’s team, however, believe it is uncommon for someone facing such minor matters to not be fined and freed. They found the judge’s ruling shocking and thinks that Archer is being treated like criminals who commit more serious crimes. Archer will now face the Supreme Court next Wednesday, and Smith revealed they are currently seeking his bail.Story by: Kay-Marie Fletcher#MagneticMediaNews#FredSmithandOmarArcher
