One of the 17-year-olds was cited for unlawfully causing a fire, police said. Officials said it appeared that at least one of them had lived in the house that burned. On Tuesday, the uninsured home of an 80-year-old man in the 4200 block of Apricot Street was destroyed while he was away visiting his wife’s grave. Officials said people had been setting off illegal fireworks at a school nearby, and a bottle rocket apparently landed on the wood-shake roof of Chris Palomarez’, who had lived in the home for 40 years. Simi Valley police are still trying today to determine who set off the fireworks that ignited his home. “It was one of the worst fireworks-related fires I’ve ever seen here in Simi Valley,” said Simi Valley police Detective Gene Hostetler. SIMI VALLEY – With the memory of two houses destroyed by separate fires caused by illegal fireworks, firefighters scrambled this afternoon to extinguish a blaze that broke out in a Kadota Avenue home, officials said. Arson investigators were on the scene of the fire in the 2400 block of Kadota Avenue, working to determine the cuase of the 1:45 p.m. blaze. A Wednesday afternoon fire in the 1800 block of Geoffrey Avenue was started by teenagers playing with fireworks when one of the devices ignited leaves on the roof of a porch, officials said. Two 17-year-old boys and one 16-year-old boy were playing with the fireworks about 3 p.m. They tried to put out the flames with a garden hose, but it spread to the attic, the Ventura County Fire Department reported. last_img read more

Gigi Rates Mitsukoshi Pick-a-Pearl Experience

first_imgShare This!As is my job as a responsible parent, I am raising my 6 year old to love all thing Disney. This includes a healthy appreciation for Epcot and all of the unique shopping ( Shopping in the Epcot Countries – Get to Know Japan) and eating (Takumi-Tei Chef’s Table: New Best Meal at Walt Disney World?) experiences it has to offer. Although we’ve passed it countless times on our path through the Mitsukoshi shopping mecca, we have never tried the Akoya pick-a-pearl experience until recently. Gigi’s feedback and reaction to the experience surprised me and made me think of some Disney experiences for little ones in a new light. Before we get to her rating, let’s discuss the basics. You can find the Akoya Pearl counter inside the first entrance to the Mitsukoshi shopping area just behind the Hello Kitty wall on the right. If you’ve ever been through these doors, you can probably smell the incense just by looking at the picture. Top 5 Disney smells of all time in my opinion. At the time of this article, the price for one oyster is $16.90 plus tax. Like all other merchandise purchases in Japan, no annual pass discounts are accepted. As with any Disney event or pricing, this is subject to change at any time. The cast member at the jewelry counter explained that certain settings would take an additional hour to complete and would require us to return for our purchase. I was shocked that Gigi wasn’t interested in any of the rings or charms and was prepared to leave with just our little plastic bag and one pearl when the cast member showed us small glass bottles filled with “pixie dust” for a much less expensive price.Gigi selected purple pixie dust bottle for $4.95 plus tax and we were on our way. Below is a picture of the finished product.Gigi’s Review: Two out of five unicorns. We discussed this at length and while she loves the little glass bottle with pixie dust and her pearl, the volume of the presentation and amount of “stranger attention” focused on her was overwhelming. In her words “I felt like everyone was staring at me while she screamed.” Eek.Mom’s Review: Gigi has never been described as shy or retiring in any setting, but this was too much even for her. I found myself immediately mentally crouching into “protective mom mode” while we were there. I could tell her little shoulders were tense and I could barely hear her voice when the cast member asked her questions. This is a child that cannot ever be described as quiet so I was on alert. My advice would be to prepare little ones for the noise and attention in advance. Overall, I’d say the glass bottle is a great value for $4.95 but I would think twice about doing this experience with another little one.On a research day in Epcot the week after Gigi’s experience, I stopped back in Mitsukoshi to ask if they could do a different presentation for people with sensory processing issues and the staff member on duty assured me they could alter the volume and eliminate the drums.Have you ever done the Akoya Pearl experience at the Japan pavilion in Epcot? What did you think? Have you ever asked for a more toned-down version? Please share your experiences in the comments! After the oyster was opened, the cast member used the scale above to measure Gigi’s pearl at 7.5mm. She then polished it and placed it in a small, clear bag – all with significant volume and drama. After Gigi was handed her pearl, we were directed to the counter immediately to the right where we could select a jewelry setting for an additional fee. After paying for the oyster, we were given a number and waited for less than 5 minutes before it was our turn to move to the main counter. After our number was called, the cast member performing at the pick-a-pearl counter began her show by asking Gigi to walk around the tank to select the oyster she wanted to open. After making her selection, the cast member reached in with a pair of long, silver tongs and grabbed her pick.Next, the cast member made a very dramatic and very loud show of opening the oyster for Gigi to reveal the pearl inside. I’ve been well inside the candy / sake section of the Mitsukoshi merchandise location at the other end of the building and have still been able to hear the drums and yelling that accompanies each pearl reveal.last_img read more

Mozilla Releases Weave 0.2: Filling in for Browser Sync

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market frederic lardinois Tags:#Browsers#news#web Related Posts A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Not too long ago, Google announced that it was going to stop the development of its Browser Sync project. Browser Sync automatically synchronized bookmarks between different computers. Mozilla just announced a new version of its own bookmarks synchronization product, Weave, which was first announced last December as a Mozilla Labs product. Its first version, while already interesting, wasn’t quite up to par with Google’s offering. With this latest version, Mozilla aims to fill the gaps left by the demise of Browser Sync – at least for Firefox 3 users.Mozilla especially reworked the installation procedure for Weave. Now, users are walked through the process after initially installing the plugin. Going Beyond BookmarksBesides just synchronizing bookmarks, Weave also saves cookies, passwords, form data, tabs, and the browsing history. These can be turned on and off selectively, though by default, they are all turned on. In the future, Weave will also start synchronizing themes, plugins, and microformats. One noteworthy difference between Browser Sync and Weave is that Weave, at least in its current implementation, does not work in real-time. Weave will automatically schedule when to synchronize bookmarks or users can initiate the process themselves. Mozilla has also implemented an initial framework for sharing data with XMPP-based notifications, but so far, it doesn’t seem like there is any front-end access to this framework just yet. In the future, though, this could be used for all kinds of interesting projects and might provide a good way for Mozilla to tie all its different projects together closer. API?When the first version of Weave was released, it seemed Mozilla was going to provide developers with an API to hook into by version 0.2. However, the current release does not mention an API anywhere, so it looks like developers will have to wait just a little bit longer before they can start developing their own tools on top of the Weave framework.CompetitionThere are, of course, already quite a few services available that provide a very similar function, most notably Foxmarks (which we named one of the Top 10 Firefox add-ons in 2006) and Del.icio.us. There are also numerous other bookmarking service available through plugins for Firefox (and IE) and while it has abandoned Browser Sync, Google hasn’t (yet?) given up on the development of Google Bookmarks, though.By making Weave part of the standard installation of Firefox at some point, though, and by providing a web front-end, Mozilla could easily bypass all of its competitors by providing a more seamless experience. Australia Takes First Blood in the Mixed Open Division

first_imgNew Zealand was the first team to score before Australia hit back to lead at half-time and take a four touchdown win. Australia’s Nikki Etheridge impressed for the Australians, scoring four touchdowns. It took until the ninth minute of the match for either country to get on the scoreboard, and it was New Zealand who took the early advantage with Tiwi Davis scoring. The Australians were quick to hit back however, with Nikki Etheridge the recipient of a great long ball from Peter Watkins to score in the corner to level the game at 1-all. Michael Chapman scored his first touchdown for Australia just after the midway mark of the half, when a deflected pass landed in his hands to give them a 2-1 lead. Watkins again set up Etheridge for her second of the game and when Sarah Spacie scored in the corner in the 18th minute, Australia had a handy 3-1 lead. New Zealand hit back just before the siren to bring the deficit back to two touchdowns, with Clayton Ngawharau diving over but the Australians went to the half-time break up by two touchdowns, 4-2. Australia was quick to get back on the scoreboard in the second half, with co-captain Roy Prasad the recipient of a switch from Watkins, to take a 5-2 lead. Etheridge got her first touchdown of the second half in the third minute of the second when Sebe Rey darted from acting half to take a four touchdown lead. New Zealand’s Awhina Savage helped reduce the deficit to three touchdowns at the midway mark of the second half, scoring in the corner for her side to trail by just three, 6-3. Watkins was in the thick of the action two minutes later, with Spacie scoring her second to extend her side’s lead to four, and Etheridge made it a five touchdown lead with five minutes remaining with her fourth touchdown. New Zealand’s Lauren Ensor scored with minutes remaining, but it wasn’t enough to spark a Kiwi comeback, with the new look Australian team taking a four touchdown win, 8-4. The quality they have is already good and we all know Brendan, what a sensational manager he is and what he’s doing with them.” last_img read more

A troubled past and attacks from opponents have not deterred Manitoba NDP

first_imgThe Canadian PressTo his supporters, Manitoba NDP Leader Wab Kinew’s troubled past is a story of personal redemption. To his opponents, it’s one of a man who hasn’t fully come clean about his actions and doesn’t deserve the keys to the premier’s office.Kinew, 37, has stayed on as Opposition leader despite previous criminal charges and revelations in the media and in attack ads by the governing Progressive Conservatives about homophobic and misogynistic rap lyrics and social media posts. The revelations, which started just as he was making his first election run in 2016 and continued through to his NDP leadership victory in 2017, might have persuaded some politicians to walk away. But Kinew has persisted and expects the governing Tories to ramp up their ads about his past now that the election campaign is underway.“Whether it’s fatalist, or whether it’s realist, I have accepted the fact that it’s going to be a tough road,” Kinew said in an interview.“I do worry a lot about what the (Tory) attacks ads are going to be like, on a personal level, because I’ve been at the centre of media firestorms before, so that does scare me.“But I continue to believe that the broader goal of standing up for health care and standing up for Manitobans is important enough for me to push forward.”Kinew was born in Kenora, Ont., and lived on the Onigaming First Nation as a young boy. His late father was a residential school survivor who endured horrific abuse and passed on to Kinew the importance of Anishinaabe culture and language. Both Kinew’s parents were well educated and wanted the same for him. He spent some of his formative years in a well-to-do suburb in southern Winnipeg and graduated from a private high school.Kinew studied economics in university and began abusing alcohol. In his 2015 memoir, “The Reason You Walk,” Kinew admitted to some of his legal troubles from 2003 and 2004 — convictions for impaired driving and an assault on a taxi driver.Court records included details about the assault not contained in the book. It started with Kinew hurling racial insults at the driver. Kinew got out and punched the cabbie in the face while he was still sitting behind the wheel, facts read into the court record say.Kinew recently received a record suspension for his convictions. The book also did not mention two assault charges Kinew faced in 2003 involving his former partner Tara Hart. Hart told The Canadian Press in 2017 that Kinew flung her across their living room, leaving her with severe rug burns. The charges were stayed in 2004 and Kinew has denied the allegation.Kinew went to Alcoholics Anonymous in his 20s and, his supporters say, turned over a new leaf. He later worked at the CBC, became the University of Winnipeg’s first director of Indigenous inclusion and wrote his book.He is known as a good public speaker. He has hosted a TV documentary series and toured on the Canadian literature circuit. Political analysts say Kinew’s ability to work a room may be better than that of his opponents.“He is a naturally gifted communicator and he has grown those talents to become even better,” said Paul Thomas, professor emeritus of political studies at the University of Manitoba.Just as Kinew started running in the 2016 election, lyrics and social media posts from his past surfaced. In one song, he bragged about slapping women’s genitalia. In a Twitter post from 2009, he mused about whether it was possible to get avian flu from “kissing fat chicks”. In another Twitter post, he joked about having run over a cat.Kinew has repeatedly apologized for his harmful behaviour while continuing to deny the domestic violence accusation.Thomas says Kinew’s story will resonate with some people as that of a troubled young man making good.“If you read his autobiography and listen to him talk, there was a moment where he turned his life around and he found direction and purpose.“Some people will say, ‘Well, I’m convinced by that. He is a different man.’”Kinew is married to Lisa Monkman, a family physician, and has three children. Despite the spotlight on his personal history, he shows no sign of letting up.“Being in leadership isn’t just about the good times. It’s also about the struggle,” Kinew said.“I really am committed to being the voice of people who are not happy right now in Manitoba, people who want us to do better.”news@aptn.calast_img read more
